Mercury's in the Microwave?! An Overview of Retrograde Planets

When Mercury goes retrograde, it generates a lot of attention on social media. Aside from knowing your "Zodiac Sign" (also known as your Sun sign), Mercury retrograde is often people's initial exposure to Astrology and cosmic energies. Whether you're knowledgeable about Astrology or simply intrigued by the retrograde frenzy, you've come to the right place.

What is a "retrograde?"

When astrologers mention that a planet is retrograde, it creates an intriguing phenomenon from our geocentric perspective (our viewpoint from Earth) regarding how planets move across the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent path in the sky). Since all planets orbit the Sun, their positions are measured along their orbital path on the ecliptic.*

When a planet is moving direct (also known as prograde) along the ecliptic, it appears to move from west to east in our sky. However, when a planet is retrograde, it creates an optical illusion from our Earthly perspective, making the planet seem to move backward (from east to west). It's important to note that this retrograde motion is indeed an optical illusion, as we would face much more severe challenges if the planets were actually orbiting backward.

*For the purposes of this blog, I will be referencing Western Astrology, which uses the Tropical Zodiac (more details on this will be provided in a separate blog post soon).

Inferior Planets and Superior Planets

According to Kepler's Laws, planets that are closer to the Sun orbit at a much faster pace than those farther away. This means that Mercury and Venus orbit the Sun more quickly than Earth does, and Earth circles the Sun faster than Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto.

When inferior planets (Mercury and Venus) station retrograde, this illusion occurs because they are essentially "lapping" Earth. On the other hand, superior planets (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto) station retrograde when Earth overtakes them from the inside lane, causing their motion to seem backward from our perspective.

The following is a chart of the 8 planets (excluding Earth and including Pluto) with pertinent orbital details.

• The Solar Year indicates the duration it takes for a planet to orbit the Sun along the ecliptic, passing through each of the 12 Zodiac signs. As you may already know, Earth completes its Solar Year in 365 days.

• The Frequency of Rx (retrograde) Cycles specifies how often a planet enters retrograde each Earth year. Mercury, due to its swift orbit around the Sun compared to Earth, enters retrograde 3-4 times annually.

• The Ave. Duration in Rx column shows the number of Earth days each planet remains in retrograde before returning to direct motion. You'll notice that the outer planets—Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—remain in retrograde for nearly half of an Earth year.

• The final column provides the percentage of people with each planet in retrograde in their natal chart. This is particularly significant for the personal planets—Mercury, Venus, and Mars—as a retrograde planet in your natal chart alters the expression of the planet within your horoscope (more details on this to come).

Navigating Retrograde Transits

Ah yes, the notorious Mercury Gatorade. Mercury in the Microwave. Mercury in Reverse Cowgirl. Social media paints a beautiful picture of mania and chaos when the planet of communication stations retrograde every couple of months. I'll start this section noting that retrogrades are not bad. Retrograde periods are simply different.

To best understand this concept, it's important to note that Astrology is a recorded language of pattern-recognition based on the energy of the planets. To adequately understand the impact of retrogrades, I invite you to shift your mindset to think about each planet from an energetic perspective.

If you'll recall from above, a retrograde planet creates optical illusion in our sky due to the difference in planetary orbital speed in reference to its position from the Sun. The entire retrograde motion is simply a visual lag in planetary movement. During retrograde periods, the planet stationing retrograde invites us to pause, delay, or reflect on the themes associated with that particular celestial body.

It's important to consider the sign(s) in which the planet is retrograding within, as the characteristics of that sign will influence the way these themes develop. A retrograde in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) might prompt you to examine your emotional life and intuition, while a retrograde in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) could lead you to review past conversations and thought patterns.

I encourage you to calculate your natal chart to identify where the sign of the current retrograde transit falls within it. A retrograde planet in your 5th house might prompt you to revisit past hobbies and creative projects, deciding whether to pursue them again or leave them behind. Meanwhile, a retrograde planet in your 9th house may encourage you to reconsider your religious and philosophical beliefs, assessing whether your current views align with who you are becoming.

In the paragraphs below, I provide a concise summary of how each planet's energy is expressed during retrograde. The inner planets—Mercury, Venus, and Mars—are nearest to the Sun and influence our everyday lives, personal routines, and short-term interactions. The outer planets progress at a much slower pace and remain in retrograde for four to six months annually. Their influence is less focused on daily disruptions and more on internal transformation and generational changes.

Mercury Retrograde

As the planet overseeing communication and intellect, Mercury retrograde can interfere with data transfers, travel plans, and everyday conversations. It creates a hazy mental atmosphere where messages are misunderstood, contracts encounter delays, and electronics fail. Use this period to carefully proofread, back up files, reconnect with old friends, and perhaps even text your favorite ex.

Venus Retrograde

Venus governs love, beauty, and finances. When it moves backward, it reveals structural issues in romantic relationships or bad spending habits. Former partners often reappear, testing whether you have truly moved on. Avoid significant commitments such as marriages, drastic hair changes, or large investments.

Mars Retrograde

Mars drives motivation, physical energy, and passion. When retrograde, your energy decreases, making new ventures feel like trudging through mud. Instead of expressing anger healthily, people tend to bottle it up until it erupts. Avoid starting conflicts or launching major competitive projects and instead opt to focus on reviewing your long-term goals.

Jupiter Retrograde

Jupiter typically expands whatever it touches, bringing luck and philosophical growth. During its retrograde, external expansion halts so internal wisdom can develop. It compels you to look inward to reassess your beliefs, ethics, and where you find true fulfillment.

Saturn Retrograde

As the cosmic taskmaster, Saturn governs boundaries, duty, and karma. Its retrograde serves as a spiritual evaluation. If you have been neglecting responsibilities, Saturn will introduce delays and obstacles to enforce a course correction. Tick tock, it's time to master self-discipline.

Uranus Retrograde

Uranus is the unpredictable planet of rebellion, sudden insights, and chaos. While its direct motion triggers external revolutions, its retrograde prompts internal awakenings. You will feel a strong urge to break free from personal ruts, mental conditioning, and outdated habits that limit your true individuality.

Neptune Retrograde

Neptune governs fantasy, illusions, spiritual connection, and escapism. Its retrograde acts as a reality check, removing rose-colored glasses. Hidden truths emerge, forcing you to confront self-deception, reality, or toxic coping mechanisms used to escape daily life.

Pluto Retrograde

Pluto deals with power dynamics, the subconscious, secrets, and transformation. This lengthy transit draws you into shadow work. It highlights where you are clinging to control out of fear or allowing others to dominate you. It's a quiet, intense phase intended for releasing emotional baggage and psychological renewal.

The Shadow Period

In astrology, a shadow period, also referred to as "retroshade," is the time surrounding a planet's retrograde when it decelerates, traverses certain zodiac degrees, and serves as a preview or resolution phase for the transit.

The pre-retrograde shadow period starts when the planet reaches the same degree and minute (the measurement used for planets in astrology) where it will station direct after the retrograde. Similarly, the post-retrograde shadow period occurs when the planet moves directly over the same degrees it previously retrograded through. Whenever a planet transitions from direct to retrograde motion (or vice versa), it will temporarily "halt" in the sky. This is known as stationing, meaning the planet appears to not move at all relative to background stars.

Here's a hypothetical example if Mercury will be the planet which will be retrograding:

• Mercury will station retrograde at 15-degrees of Gemini and "move backwards" into 5-degrees of Gemini.

• The pre-retrograde shadow period will begin when Mercury moves into 5-degrees of Gemini (typically 2-3 weeks prior to the retrograde period). The planet will begin to "slow down" from our perspective, and little irritations or delays may start to come to the surface.

• At 15-degrees of Gemini, Mercury begins stationing, changing direction from direct to retrograde. This brief standstill concentrates and intensely amplifies the planet's core energy.

• Next, we enter the retrograde period, where Mercury appears to move backward and shift from 15-degrees of Gemini back to 5-degrees of Gemini. This is the main act in which is described in the section above.

• Once Mercury returns to 5-degrees of Gemini, it will again station for a brief period before moving direct.

• As Mercury moves direct and crosses the 5-15-degrees of Gemini for the third time, it offers time to integrate the lessons brought to light from the retrograde.

Final Notes

At the time I am writing this blog post in July of 2026, we are currently in the few days in-between where Mercury is currently in the post-shadow period in the sign of Cancer, and Saturn is about to station retrograde in the sign of Aries until December 10th, 2026. I strongly encourage you to attempt to avoid being swept up in the buzz of social media and potential fear-mongering, and instead lean into the lessons and internal reflection that retrograde planets offer.
